Future city

HOW WILL FOOD FULFILLMENT EVOLVE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE IN THE FUTURE?

Future city

Ready or not, our world is transforming dramatically

Population is increasing, natural resources are becoming more constrained, and humans are flocking to urban centers. The food system in future urban environments, and more specifically distribution and fulfillment of food, will simultaneously be more constrained and need to meet an exponentially increasing demand. Knowing that the next wave of urban innovation is inevitable and already happening, what will food fulfillment look like in the landscape of future cities and how can we start preparing for it?

Dense City
  Profile

Dense cities will have to solve for issues caused by overpopulation, limited space, and strained supply for critical resources. Alternative food sources, urban consolidation centers, micro-fulfillment, and mandated delivery times will become more commonplace.

  Profile

Efficient cities will face technology-driven disruption and pressure to optimize their services and operations. Intelligent inventory and packaging, predictive ordering, automated distribution and fulfillment, and optimized food sources will be the way cities achieve this type of efficiency.

  Profile

Vulnerable cities will face limited access to resources, under the constant threat of disaster, and rapid environmental changes. Diversified food sources, nimble logistics, decentralized distribution, and regulated delivery zones will be some of the ways cities protect themselves against a more volatile environment.

  Profile

Green cities will face increased environmental regulations and pressure from citizens demanding sustainable goods and practices. Local food, renewable energy and sustainable practices, circular economies, and increased green legislation will be the ways that distributors in green cities will adapt to meet this need.

  Profile

Booming cities will face rapidly growing economies, rapid urban development, and a constant pressure to innovate. Open data environments, predictive ordering, advanced warehousing technologies, and symbiotic partnerships will become commonplace in fast-growing urban centers.

Insight:

Culture is shifting with a priority on identity, sharing, and transparency.

IN CONCLUSION...

The opportunities and pressures that cities experience will become major drivers of innovation across all industries, but especially food. Rapid changes in population density, climate, and societal norms mean that urban centers will demand more food in increasingly complex settings. At Relish Works, we want to be a part of the conversation around helping the food service industry benefit from the opportunities of a more connected, flexible world—as well as helping them overcome the challenges that more dense, volatile, and crowded cities will create for them.
